Prelude Europe

PRELUDE

This op-ed piece about Europe originates from the concern about developments within and outside of Europe (see Post-Truth Era), especially when it comes to the often extreme populism and the associated interests that are exclusively served.

Gerard approaches this subject, how could it be otherwise, from his Christian perspective in which it does not concern the interest and/or dogmas of churches, whatever they may be, to prevail over the core of the message of Christ, which is to do good for all people.

This, regardless of difference in ethnicity, religious belief, culture or customs.

It can not be the case that we shut people out because they watch television on a Sunday and therefore do not belong to our private club of Christians.

Another example is that the way in which we celebrate the Lord’s Supper can not and may not be defining the way in which we deal with others who think differently.

But political opinions too can not be a stumbling block to do good for humanity in and outside of Europe.

Above all, whether one is a Christian or not, whether one is priding himself upon the Christian tradition or not, serving only your self-interest is something that is reprehensible.

After all, at the heart of the matter every human being desires a good and great life on earth, without wars, violence and all the misery that comes with it.

Therefore every person is fully responsible for how he or she lives and gives answer to the problems mentioned above in words and deeds.

“United we stand, divided we fall” is also the basic Christian idea behind highlighting this subject.

United meaning that we work together, whether or not in different (political) groups to achieve a unified goal even though we think differently about the way in which this should accomplished.

This way we enter into dialogue, not with populist slogans, but with substantiated facts and arguments.

Unity gives strength, serious division makes man weak in himself and towards others.

Hope is therefore expressed that the content of this subject gives food for thought and perhaps offers an extra stimulus to build a good and better society for all together.

We are looking forward to your response.
